W.H.Y. The Holiday Season Doesn’t have to Reset Your Year

Welcome to the whirlwind end-of-the-year holiday season! I always feel like once October 31 hits, it’s Hallowthanksmas, and I barely have time to breathe before I realize it’s a new year! As we’re at the beginning of what can be a busy, stressful holiday season, I want to take a minute to remind you of things you can be doing now to make it less so.

All The Yummy Food

Ok, so Halloween hits, and you’ve been doing so well with your eating all year, so you decide to have that yummy Reese’s one night. No big deal. But then your kids have to give up some of their candy as a punishment, and who’s going to let that go to waste? 😉 By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, you’ve been eating multiple pieces of candy each day and are really craving the sugar. Why not keep going with the holiday pies? And then, of course, it’s Christmas season, and you just can’t say no to Grandma’s secret recipe sugar cookies!

STOP right there and breathe! It’s only the beginning of November. However, doesn’t the spiral into those New Year’s resolutions start now? What would happen if you ended the holiday season, not feeling defeated and bloated, but with satisfaction and energy?

This doesn’t mean you have to give up all the good food! In fact, sometimes when we totally give up the foods we crave, we tend to go overboard when we allow ourselves to have them again. But what are ways you can be mindful of what you’re eating over the next couple months? What do you feel like is a satisfying, yet healthy, amount of pie/cookies/candy/mashed potatoes for your health goals?

Your holiday eating starts now! So enjoy what you can, but be mindful of what you’ve accomplished this year, and what your goals are for 2024 =)

Turkey Trots are Not for Me

Your uncle usually arranges for the family to do a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, but you HATE running. (Who in their right mind would get up so early on a holiday to RUN of all things? 😉 ) Does that mean any exercise goes out the window, and you may as well just watch the Macy’s Day Parade? In this particular instance, I would vote for both!

But if it’s cold where you are this time of year, and you really can’t (or don’t want to) be outside, what are ways to get moving?

Are you going to the mall to do some shopping anyway? Invite a friend and take a few extra laps around. Is there a rec center that offers some fun Zumba classes to holiday music? Or can you put on your favorite Mariah Carey Christmas album and do a 10-20 minute bodyweight workout at home? Do the kids need to burn some energy? Imagine how Santa’s reindeer have to train all year to pull his sleigh and try to recreate their exercise routine!

Anyway you move is good, and will help you stay warm and keep your energy up for all the baking/shopping/family celebrations coming your way.

The Holidays are Hard

For some of you, the holidays aren’t so jolly. I’m sorry this is a difficult time of year.

Mental/emotional health is just as important as the physical aspect. If this is not the most wonderful time of year for you, let your friends and loved ones know how they can best support you. You may not even know, but they want to be there to help in whatever way possible. Maybe that’s just hanging out with some hot cocoa. Or maybe it’s talking through whatever grief you may be experiencing. And maybe it’s volunteering somewhere to avoid the traditions. That’s ok. Whatever you decide, may it be a blessing to you and those around you.

You’ve Got This!

So whatever your holiday hesitation is, your mindset towards it starts now! If you want to get a head start on those New Year Resolutions or just want to get through the next couple months and feel good about yourself, book a Discovery Call with me! It’s free and can give you the headstart you need to close out the year well.

Our family enjoyed the long fall and the beautiful weather we had this year!
